About Mount Pleasant

A church rooted in history and committed to serving God and our community.

Our Story

154 years of God's faithfulness.

Mount Pleasant Baptist Church was organized in mid-summer of 1872 in the home of James Moore Coffman, a young Baptist minister and son of David H. Coffman, Sr., who gave the land for church and school purposes.

A year after the church was organized, a school was built on the land where Layne School now stands. The congregation met in the school building until 1920, when a frame building was built on West Walker.

J.K.P. Williams, a well-known Baptist minister, organized the church and served as pastor for more than 10 years.

The church moved to its present location on West Morton Street in 1946. The brick building burned in 1951, but it was rebuilt the same year with a second story on the educational wing.

Our Vision

Put God first in everything we do.

We strive to always put God first, seeking God's will in everything we do. Our goal is to worship God and, in that worship, serve our community.

At our church, you'll find a place that uplifts and comforts your soul. You'll connect with others facing similar challenges, and together we support one another. We are imperfect individuals striving to follow a perfect God.

Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church is where your life and faith unite.
